You Opened Up My World

— Brian W. Flynn

How could I have missed it, you’ve always been right there,
Part of everything I’ve done, I just didn’t seem to care.
And I’ve taken you for granted, you never said a word,
You just pointed to the future, you opened up my world.

You led me safely through the dark, you touched the strings on this guitar,
That helped me win a woman’s heart, and you still hold her hand today.
You pulled me up to help me stand, you put the ring on a young bride’s hand,
You’ve safely held my wedding band, for almost fifty years.

I’m still amazed I didn’t see, all the things you’ve done for me,
You made me who I’ve come to be, you opened up my world.

You lead me through the scary places, the empty and darkest spaces,
You were the first to touch my children’s faces, you picked them up when they fell down.
You’ve greeted all the strangers, and waved all my goodbyes,
You’ve wiped back all the tears that fell so easy from my eyes

I’m still amazed I didn’t see, all the things you’ve done for me,
You made me who I’ve come to be, you opened up my world.

So it seems that we’ve grown old together, we don’t move so well in colder weather,
I’m guessin’ things won’t get much better as we move on through our days.
I’ll make a promise here and now, in all the days that we’re allowed,
Together we’ll get through somehow, you opened up my world.

I’m still amazed I didn’t see, all the things you’ve done for me,
You made me who I’ve come to be, you opened up my world.
